Refreshed in Vaison-la-Romaine

I spent a glorious October day climbing up and down the streets of medieval Vaison-la-Romaine alone with my paints. The town had haunted my memory since I first visited it ten years ago. This trip I made up for not being able to paint there on my first encounter, propped and perched wherever I pleased: being October, I had the narrow streets to myself! This charming little painting is one of two I did that day which pay homage to all the fountains across France which have nurtured residents, pilgrims, and passers-by over the centuries. Intimate moments of life include fresh water on a parched palate. Clear blue shutters, clambering vines and tile roofs add to the visual delight.
