Inner Light

Inner Light, 18x28. Oil on fine canvas

Being a huge fan of painting interiors, it's hard to resist alluding to them, even when painting a building in a landscape I spent some idyllic times at this restored mill on a painting trip years ago. It twists and turns to accommodate the road on one side and the stream on the other, living harmoniously for centuries with nature. I remember the fields beyond, bordering the country roads, being ripe with pastoral painting fodder. Painting it again after many years, I was challenged to capture the lyrical poetry of nature caressing the building with the sweeping hedgerow in the foreground and the stately tree rising above the tallest portion of the rambling structure. But in the end, I couldn't help but hint at some light within.
