As I painted this farm on the edge of Collognes la Rouge in central France, I asked myself why so many paintings are anchored by a central road. Why would I paint another one? Beyond the universal role they serve in life as a means of transportation, in paintings they are a means to draw our eye from the foreground to the background. Metaphysically, they also symbolize life's path. The stone buildings closing in on the lane in this scene are a reminder that even when under the constraints in life, there is not only enough room to pass through successfully, but also a distant opening of hope on the horizon.
