Crossing the Threshold

As winter wanes, I've taken a turn on the painting road in order to articulate the subtle poetry of shadows in dimly lit interiors. Doing so has given me a means to express quiet images like Tonalist painters did over a century ago.

Crossing the Threshold started with a quick black and white sketch to establish a basic composition of light and dark areas. That information was then painted onto canvas with a thin wash. Subsequent thin layers of neutral light and dark mixtures of paint gradually created the mood I was seeking. Subtle bits of color were finally applied to bring the painting to life. Using this Tonalist approach was the secret to creating the pensive mood which has haunted me since the day I crossed the threshold of this tiny bistro in George Sand country.

It's taken four years to be able to paint the spiritual mystery I felt that afternoon when I stepped back in time. Now I can romance the rustic with paintings that sing pensive poems as well as Fauvist fanfares.

Do stop in this Saturday between ten and one to have a look in person. It's the last Saturday to receive a gratitude discount for having followed me to my new email server. Appointments are also welcome through Tuesday, March 17. Or you can receive the same courtesy online. The following weekend I'm off on another Artistic Adventure!
